Daddy Yankee grew up and became interested in hip-hop in Spanish, especially for the socially conscious themes of Vico C, was increasingly attracted to the street life of his neighborhood, the Villa Kennedy housing project in San Juan. The nickname of "Yankee" arose from Puerto Rican slang for someone who is great at what he does.
